I had another visit with Trish Stratus, the former WWE diva who has transitioned from the ring to a yoga studio. The effervescent Stratus hosted us at Stratusphere, her new yoga facility, with the purpose of showing us her new program aimed at golfers.

The facility is remarkable, well designed (by Stratus) and welcoming. There are three studios, including one for doing hot yoga which was at a temperature of 103 when we stepped inside (if you've never done hot yoga, it's worth a try).

After getting the tour, Stratus put me through a series of poses she has designed combining yoga moves with golf moves. She said that there are some definite synergies between golf and yoga, one of the most obvious are the moves, which pose the body in similar positions.. Now I'll admit to being a bit of a skeptic going in, but there's little doubt that you'd be stretched out if you did even a couple of these before you teed off (you'll be able to see us in action on the site in the next day or so). It's easy to see that doing it a couple of times a week would greatly increase your flexibility and strength. Consider me a full convert, I felt great after I was done.

Doing the exercises for the first time wasn't hard although it was harder work than I thought. You definitely had to keep your focus or you might fall over. And that, says Stratus, is another benefit.

She's had a number of professional athletes up at Stratusphere from members of the Leafs to the Argos and she says almost every one of them walks away realizing the benefits. After going through what I did yesterday, I think the benefits for regular folks, and regular golfers would be equally beneficial.

Stratus came up with the program after attending a lot of charity/celebrity golf tournaments where she didn't really play much, but spent a lot of time in the cart watching. She has only recently become a convert to playing golf and has taken to it with a lot of enthusiasm (it's hard to think she does anything without a lot of enthusiasm), working with the folks at Callaway to learn the game.
