Metro Toronto: Fighting For Recognition
Having the Chicago soundtrack memorized inside and out was one of the things that landed Toronto native Trish Stratus her glamourous gig as host of this year’s Canada’s Walk Of Fame.
“Chicago is one of my favourite movies ... so I told them I could sing the whole soundtrack of Chicago in my car, and I don’t know, but it sold them,” Stratus told Metro yesterday, explaining how she was chosen as host of Saturday’s Walk of Fame ceremony at the Hummingbird Centre.
But maybe it wasn’t all based on Stratus’ ability to sing the film’s soundtrack line for line or her knack for being recognized around the globe as the reigning World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Women’s Champion.
“I think they also looked at the chance to bring in a younger demographic (of viewers) by having me there,” Stratus says. “This is probably one of the most exciting things I’ve done in my career because it’s completely new, and I’m able to do things I’ve never done before.”
Not only will Stratus be hosting the gala event, but she’ll be putting on a Chicago-styled song and dance opening number dedicated to the inductees to kick off the festivities.
The red carpet will be rolled out as eight new Canadian stars from the worlds of sports and entertainment are honoured this weekend. This year’s inductees are: actress and model Pamela Anderson; Juno award-winning singer/songwriter Jann Arden; Olympic medal-winning skiers The Crazy Canucks (Steve Podborski, Ken Read, Dave Irwin and Dave Murray); actor Brendan Fraser; Juno, Grammy and Emmy-winning musician Robert Goulet; actor/comedian Eugene Levy; David Letterman’s sidekick Paul Shaffer; and Jeopardy host Alex Trebek.
“I don’t think the world realizes how many talented people have come out of Canada,” Stratus says. “A lot of times it’s like, ‘Oh, they’re Canadian?’ and the more we have the Canada’s Walk Of Fame (to) bring recognition to the talent we have up here, people won’t have that question mark at the end of that sentence.”
