Official 8/7 RAW Preview: Trish vs. Mickie

Press     August 7, 2006

Tonight on RAW, a new chapter will be written in the storied rivalry of arguably the two most talented Divas in all of sports-entertainment when Women’s Champion Mickie James defends her Championship against Trish Stratus. WWE.com has learned that the contest will open the live broadcast of RAW, which comes to you live from the FedEX Forum in Memphis Tennessee. (Arena Report – FedEx Forum)

The rivalry between Mickie and Trish was originally focused around Mickie’s obsession with her idol, but later, the competition between the two turned towards the Women’s Championship, which at the time was held by Stratus. Mickie’s first attempt at Trish’s gold came at New Year’s Revolution ’06, where, despite a game showing, she came up short as Stratus retained with the Chick Kick.

Since New Year’s Revolution though, the rivalry has been somewhat one-sided. Mickie made history when she defeated Trish for the gold at WrestleMania 22, ending Stratus’ lengthy hold on the Championship, and signaling a change in the landscape of the Women’s Division in WWE.

At Backlash, Trish had a chance to regain the gold which she was so accustomed to wearing. However, an evening of opportunity for Trish quickly turned into a night from hell for the determined challenger. Midway through the match, Trish suffered a gruesome shoulder injury which greatly limited her offensive fire power. Sensing the weakness, Mickie went in for the kill. Before long, her emotions got the better of her and she was disqualified for refusing to break a choke hold at the referee’s count of five. While Trish technically scored the victory, Mickie retained her Championship.

Following the injury, Trish took a break from WWE to heal her wounds. Upon her return, Trish was thrown right into the fire. On her first night back, she was given a rematch with the Women’s Champion. Unfortunately for Trish and her fans, it was not meant to be as the rust from her break appeared to get the best of her, and Mickie retained the gold.

Tonight, the intense and competitive rivalry will be extended yet again when the Divas get it on to open Monday Night RAW. See what happens when the sexiest women on television do battle for one of the richest prizes in all of sports-entertainment, live at 9/8 CT and only on USA.
