Ex-Wrestling Star Leads Second City Audition Hunt
You wouldn't think there would be a lot of similarities between professional wrestling and Second City.
The former starts out with some carefully rehearsed moves in a ring.
The latter involves some completely unrehearsed moves in the round.
And never the twain shall meet.
So you might wonder what the woman is doing recruiting talent for Second City.
Trish Stratus was in Toronto Wednesday proving that her talent search really is a laughing matter.
"I have a little bit of history here," she reveals. "I broke my thumb in wrestling and I had a little downtime because I couldn't wrestle at the time. And I came to Second City and I thought I would try some improv classes."
That's how this former ring-leader wound up joining the hunt for the company's next comedy legend, to be placed alongside such greats as John Candy, Dave Thomas, Katherine O'Hara, Andrea Martin and Mike Myers.
"We'll go across Canada and we'll hold auditions," she explains. "We're starting in Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax and come back to Toronto ... They've got to put on their best comedy. We have the celebrity judges of course."
Among them: SCTV vet Joe Flaherty.
He recalls seeing the then-much younger Stratus hanging around the troupe.
"I knew she worked on stage here for a week," he remembers. "She loves Second City."
Flaherty is convinced the gripping grappler is the perfect choice to lead the judging. professional wrestlers sitting in on the Nobel Prize."
