Toronto Star: Trish Stratus Grams It Up
"Is that what I think it is?"
I am ogling the bling on Trish Stratus's wrist — a gold and diamond Rolex watch with mother-of-pearl face.
"This was my present to myself after my first big Pay Per View in 2001," the WWE star revealed yesterday as we sat down to chat. "I wrestled (WWE chairman) Vince McMahon's daughter, Stephanie. It's the only piece of jewellery I'll wear ... and whatever winds up on this finger," she says indicating the spot where a wedding ring might land."
"Any candidates?" I probe.
It's a question Stratus evades, and I soon realize that romance is something she simply doesn't have time for.
This Saturday at the Hummingbird Centre, she is to host Canada's Walk of Fame which airs the following day on CTV at 7 p.m.
Pamela Anderson, Jann Arden, skiers Steve Podborski, Ken Read, Dave Irwin and Dave Murray a.k.a. The Crazy Canucks, Brendan Fraser, Robert Goulet, Eugene Levy, Paul Shaffer and Alex Trebek are this year's inductees.
If there is any hint of opportunity here for 30-year-old Stratus, have no doubt she will wrestle it to the ground. As host, she plans to make her singing and dancing debut with a number from the film Chicago, with lyrics changed to refer to the inductees.
Her outfit for that was inspired by the white costume Renée Zellweger wore in the film.
Stratus has six other changes planned including "a perfect little black dress" from Chanel for the red carpet arrivals, to be aired by CTV's eTalk on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
Stratus also has a cocktail dress and sexy tuxedo gown coming from Joeffer Caoc, who told her that her body is "perfect."
"I herniated a disc last year and started doing Bikram yoga," Stratus says.
"I've lost 10 pounds and am more toned, as opposed to muscular. But I still have problems zipping up dresses. The boobs get in the way."
That shouldn't be an issue for bridal designer Renella di Fina who is creating two gowns for Stratus' Walk of Fame gig.
"One is ocean blue taffeta and the other is a coppery brown silk satin." The girl doesn't miss a trick.
This is the woman who tells me yesterday's interview outfit is "nothing to brag about" — a black Gap T-shirt with peekaboo cleavage, black Sandra Angelozzi Bermudas from a store she can't remember in Bayview Village, and Aldo cowboy boots.
In fact, Stratus swears she hates shopping.
"It's not productive. When I shop I feel like I'm wasting time. I shop on a need-to-buy basis."
For makeup, she sticks with the tried and true: MAC Studio Fix foundation, Cover Girl mascara, Elizabeth Grant skincare products from The Shopping Channel, and litres of fake tan. "And if I can, on my way in from the airport I hit Classic Tan in Etobicoke for the Mystic spray booth."
This doesn't sound at all like the tomboy Stratus says she was growing up in Richmond Hill.
"For Canada's Walk of Fame, I want to be everything people don't think I am," she vows. "I want to show them the girl-glam side."
Is she at all nervous? I mean, she's never taken singing lessons, and a whole country could be watching.
"In wrestling, we have long road trips from town to town. I love to sing and I bought the Chicago soundtrack and I've got the whole thing memorized. I was the one who asked them if I could sing on the show. My motto is preparedness meets opportunity. I'm ready."
